An email exchange with my supervisor, who is in Panama currently, made me return to my childhood a bit. Not because of the contents of the discussion, but because of the associations the word “Panama” has for me. I cannot help but to think of the children’s book “The Trip to Panama” by German author Janosch.

It’s the story of Little Tiger and Little Bear who live together in a small cottage. One day a box with ‘Panama’ written on it arrives and they decide to set off to find this wonderful place. They wander around for a long time having various adventures, and eventually return back at the place they came from, without knowing that it was the place - they think they are in Panama. They find their old hut, which by this point has fallen into disrepair, and decide to do it up and live in it happily. So sweet and lovely!

So here are some of the illustrations from the book!

I recently saw “Into the Wild” and was captured by its beauty. The soundtrack by Eddie Vedder is hauntingly good as well. Worth checking out.

About the film:

“Based on a true story. After graduating from Emory University in 1992, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) abandoned his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters who shape his life”.
